Instagram will discontinue its end-to-end encrypted messaging feature starting May 8, 2026, as part of a broader product update confirmed by parent company Meta.

The move means that chats secured with end-to-end encryption — where messages are protected using unique keys to prevent third-party access — will no longer be supported on the platform.

In an official notice, Meta informed users that those with encrypted chats will receive prompts on how to download their messages and media before the feature is retired. Users on older versions of the app may also need to update Instagram to access the download option.

“End-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram will no longer be supported after 8 May 2026. If you have chats that are affected by this change, you will see instructions on how you can download any media or messages that you may want to keep,” the company said in its statement.

Following the change, users seeking encrypted communication will need to turn to alternative platforms. Other services under Meta, such as WhatsApp, will continue to offer end-to-end encryption, alongside competitors like Signal and Telegram.

According to a Meta spokesperson cited by The Verge, the decision to phase out the feature stems from low user demand. The development also comes amid increasing regulatory scrutiny worldwide around encrypted communication services, particularly over concerns related to misuse for illegal activities.
