Warner Bros. Discovery is winding down the standalone discovery+ streaming service in India, marking the end of the platform’s direct-to-consumer operations in the market.
Effective September 3, users in India will no longer be able to purchase new discovery+ subscriptions either directly from Warner Bros. Discovery or through third-party providers. The discovery+ app and website are scheduled to be discontinued on November 3, 2026.
Existing subscribers will be affected based on their current billing cycles. For monthly subscribers, auto-renewals will be discontinued from October 3, while access will remain available until the end of their ongoing billing period.
Annual subscribers whose plans expire between October 3 and November 3 will continue to have access until their existing subscriptions expire, with no further renewals. Subscribers with annual plans extending beyond November 3 will receive a pro-rated refund for the unused portion of their subscription after the platform shuts down.
While the standalone service is being discontinued, discovery+ content will continue to be available in India through partner platforms, including Amazon Prime Video Channels, Jio TV+, Jio TV, Tata Play Binge, Dish TV VZY and Playbox TV.
The move effectively shifts discovery+ from a standalone streaming proposition to a partner-led distribution model. However, Warner Bros. Discovery has not yet detailed how its content library will be packaged, distributed or positioned across these partner platforms.
The shutdown comes as streaming companies increasingly reassess the economics of operating standalone platforms, with several media businesses exploring partnerships, aggregation and third-party distribution to reach audiences at scale.
