Walmart Inc. has announced that John Furner will assume the role of President and Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Doug McMillon, with effect from February 1, 2026.
The leadership transition comes as the world’s largest retailer continues to focus on technology-led growth, operational efficiency and evolving customer expectations across its global markets.
From Walmart U.S. chief to global CEO
Furner currently serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Walmart U.S., the company’s largest business unit, where he has been credited with accelerating growth, strengthening employee engagement and driving the use of technology to improve both customer experience and internal operations.
Prior to taking charge of Walmart U.S., he led Sam’s Club U.S. as President and CEO, overseeing its transformation into a digitally enabled, membership-driven retail business.
Three decades at Walmart
Furner joined Walmart in 1993 as an hourly associate at Store 100 in Bentonville, Arkansas, beginning a career that has spanned more than 30 years across multiple leadership roles within the organisation.
Over the years, he has worked across store operations, merchandising and corporate leadership, playing a key role in shaping Walmart’s modern retail strategy in the United States.
Industry leadership beyond Walmart
In addition to his responsibilities at the retailer, Furner serves on the board of the National Retail Federation (NRF) and was its chairman from 2022 to 2025, contributing to industry-wide initiatives on retail policy, technology adoption and workforce development.
