Apple has announced a major leadership transition, with Tim Cook set to become Executive Chairman of the company’s board, while John Ternus will take over as Chief Executive Officer from September 1, 2026.

The move, unanimously approved by Apple’s Board of Directors, is part of a long-planned succession strategy. Cook will continue as CEO through the summer, working closely with Ternus to ensure a smooth handover before stepping into his new role, where he will continue contributing to key areas such as global policy engagement.

Ternus, currently Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, will also join Apple’s board alongside his elevation to CEO. A longtime Apple executive, he has been with the company for over two decades and has played a pivotal role in the development of major products across categories including iPhone, Mac, iPad, and wearables.

In a statement, Cook expressed strong confidence in his successor, describing Ternus as a visionary leader with deep technical expertise and integrity. Ternus, in turn, called the opportunity “profound,” noting his long association with Apple and experience working under both Cook and Steve Jobs.

As part of the transition, Arthur Levinson, who has served as non-executive chairman for the past 15 years, will become Lead Independent Director.

Cook’s tenure as CEO, which began in 2011, has been marked by significant growth and transformation. Under his leadership, Apple’s market capitalization rose from approximately $350 billion to $4 trillion, while annual revenue nearly quadrupled. He also oversaw the launch of new product categories such as Apple Watch and AirPods, alongside the expansion of Apple’s services business into a $100 billion segment.

Ternus has been instrumental in shaping Apple’s hardware innovation, including advancements in Mac, iPhone, and AirPods, as well as driving improvements in product durability, sustainability, and materials engineering.

The leadership change signals continuity within Apple, with a seasoned insider taking the helm as the company looks to build on its legacy of innovation and global growth.
