San Francisco | Meta has begun testing a new “Instagram for TV” experience that allows users to watch Reels on larger screens, marking the platform’s first serious move into lean-back, shared viewing. The limited pilot is currently available in the United States on Amazon Fire TV devices.
The TV app reimagines Instagram Reels for a living-room setting, organising short-form videos into interest-based channels such as music, sports, travel and trending content. Once a channel is selected, Reels play automatically with sound, eliminating the need for scrolling and mimicking a traditional TV viewing experience.
According to Meta, the test is designed to better understand how Reels are consumed in shared environments, as viewing habits increasingly shift from individual mobile use to group settings.
Personalised Viewing for Households
Users can sign in with their existing Instagram accounts directly on Fire TV or connect via the Instagram mobile app. The TV version supports up to five profiles, allowing different household members to access personalised recommendations. Meta said users may also create a separate account exclusively for TV viewing if they wish to keep recommendations distinct.
Safety Controls and Content Standards
Content available on Instagram for TV follows the platform’s existing community guidelines and is broadly aligned with a PG-13 rating. Meta confirmed that teen safety features and screen-time controls available on mobile devices also extend to the TV experience.
More Features in the Pipeline
Meta described the rollout as an early test, with several enhancements under consideration. Planned additions include phone-based navigation, expanded browsing tools, shared viewing features and easier ways to follow creators directly from the TV interface.
For now, Instagram for TV remains available only on Amazon Fire TV devices in the US. Meta said it plans to expand the experience to additional devices and markets based on user feedback and viewing behaviour.
