Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) has launched its Tamil general entertainment channel, Sony VIZHA, in Malaysia in partnership with pay-TV operator Astro. The channel is available on Astro channel 220 and its streaming platform, Astro GO.

The launch marks SPNI’s first linear channel debut on Astro, expanding the network’s Tamil entertainment portfolio for audiences in Malaysia.

Named after the Tamil word for celebration or festival, Sony VIZHA offers a mix of reality shows, fiction, films, music and international formats adapted for Tamil-speaking audiences. Its programming is accompanied by English subtitles.

The channel’s line-up includes Tamil Idol, associated with A.R. Rahman, and Celebrity MasterChef Tamil, featuring Samantha Ruth Prabhu as a celebrity judge. Its fiction offerings include Notebook 90’s – Kadhal Flashback, Crime Patrol – Kutrangal Tharum Echarikkai and Madam Police – Naanga Irukka Bayamen, alongside a selection of films.

Rajesh Kaul, chief revenue officer and business head – Sports and International, SPNI, said the launch represents a strategic step towards expanding the network’s international presence and deepening its engagement with Tamil-speaking audiences outside India.

He added that the channel’s mix of global intellectual properties, established talent and culturally relevant storytelling reflects SPNI’s focus on delivering differentiated content across markets. The partnership with Astro is expected to extend its Tamil entertainment offering to more viewers in the region.

Prem Anand Rajahram, vice president – Indian Customer Business, Astro, said the launch marks the beginning of a strategic partnership between the two companies. He added that Astro, as Sony VIZHA’s first international partner, aims to strengthen its Indian entertainment offering in Malaysia.

According to Rajahram, the channel’s combination of reality entertainment, films, original dramas and culturally relevant content will further enhance Astro’s premium Indian programming portfolio.

Sony VIZHA is available to Malaysian viewers on Astro channel 220 and through Astro GO.
