Prime Video has said that nearly one in four viewers of its Indian content now come from outside the country, underlining the expanding global reach of Indian films and series on the streaming platform. The data points to a steady rise in overseas consumption of locally produced Indian programming, according to insights shared by the company.
The platform noted that Indian originals and licensed local titles are increasingly being watched across regions including North America, Europe, the Middle East and parts of Asia.
Beyond the diaspora audience
Prime Video said the growth is no longer driven only by the Indian diaspora. A significant portion of international viewership is now coming from non-Indian audiences discovering Indian stories through genre preferences, recommendations and platform discovery tools.
According to the company, crime dramas, thrillers and character-driven series have shown particularly strong traction across international markets, contributing to sustained overseas engagement.
Language diversity aids global discovery
The platform highlighted that Indian content across multiple languages — including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and other regional formats — has found resonance with global viewers. Episodic storytelling and shorter-format series have also helped improve completion rates and repeat viewing outside India.
Prime Video said its recommendation systems increasingly surface Indian titles to global users whose viewing habits align with the themes and genres of these shows.
Platform perspective
Commenting on the trend, a Prime Video spokesperson said the overseas share of Indian content viewership reflects the universal appeal of locally rooted stories. The executive added that strong writing, production quality and culturally authentic narratives have enabled Indian content to connect with audiences well beyond domestic markets.
The company reiterated its commitment to investing in Indian creators while positioning local stories for global discovery.
Strategic implications for OTT platforms
Industry observers say the data reinforces a broader trend in global streaming, where regional content is emerging as a key driver of international growth. For platforms like Prime Video, Indian originals are increasingly viewed not just as domestic offerings, but as global content assets.
As competition intensifies in the OTT space, the ability of Indian programming to attract sustained international viewership could influence future commissioning strategies, localisation efforts and marketing investments.
