The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has proposed a unified and simplified regulatory framework for television, private FM radio and other broadcasting services, with the objective of reducing compliance burdens and modernising media governance in India.
The proposed framework seeks to consolidate fragmented and legacy regulations into a single statutory structure. Key measures include simplifying licensing and renewal procedures, standardising operational requirements and digitising clearance processes to minimise administrative delays for broadcasters and radio operators.
The draft rules are also aimed at removing redundant regulatory requirements and improving the ease of doing business for media companies. The streamlined framework is expected to provide greater operational flexibility to broadcasters as technology and consumer media consumption patterns continue to evolve.
The Ministry has invited feedback from industry stakeholders and the public on the proposed framework. The move marks a step towards establishing a more streamlined, technology-enabled and business-friendly regulatory environment for India’s broadcasting sector.
