Lionsgate has sold its South Asia and Southeast Asia-focused streaming platform, Lionsgate Play, to Rohit Jain, the executive who built and scaled the service across the region over the past eight years.
Jain, who served as president of Lionsgate Play Asia, will take full ownership and management control of the platform and will exit Lionsgate as part of the transaction. The studio clarified that all its other film and television operations in India and Southeast Asia will remain under Lionsgate’s control.
Shift to founder-led ownership model
With the acquisition, Lionsgate Play moves to a founder-led structure, aimed at strengthening its regional focus and positioning the platform for growth in Asia’s rapidly expanding digital entertainment market.
Under a multi-year agreement, Lionsgate will continue to license the Lionsgate Play brand name to the platform and provide access to its portfolio of films and television series. This arrangement will allow the streaming service to maintain its Hollywood content offering while pursuing expansion across the region.
Lionsgate praises Jain’s leadership
Commenting on the development, Lionsgate chief operating officer Brian Goldsmith credited Jain with building the company’s presence in India and strengthening its brand in Asia.
“We thank Rohit for his outstanding leadership in building and scaling Lionsgate’s business in India over the past eight years,” Goldsmith said. “Under his stewardship, the Lionsgate brand has gained greater resonance with audiences in South Asia and Southeast Asia, and Lionsgate Play has emerged as a distinctive premium streaming platform in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital entertainment markets.
“Rohit is an entrepreneur with a deep understanding of the Asia landscape, and he has the expertise and experience to lead Lionsgate Play into an exciting new phase of growth,” he added.
Jain outlines expansion plans
Jain said the transaction marks a new chapter for the platform, which he described as well-positioned to broaden its footprint beyond India.
“I’m deeply grateful to Jon Feltheimer and Brian Goldsmith for the trust and freedom to build Lionsgate’s India business and transform Lionsgate Play into a premium streaming platform across Asia,” he said.
“Lionsgate Play has established itself as a leading destination for Hollywood content in India and is now positioned to expand well beyond that – shaping a differentiated, future-ready streaming platform for the region,” Jain added.
The deal comes at a time when competition among streaming platforms in South and Southeast Asia continues to intensify, driven by rising smartphone adoption, improving internet connectivity and growing demand for international and local content.
