The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated legal proceedings against three food businesses — Surya Food & Agro, which manufactures Priyagold biscuits, Dodla Dairy and UEIR Organic Foods — following inspections and laboratory tests that allegedly revealed violations of food safety standards.
The action against Surya Food & Agro followed a consumer complaint that prompted an inspection of its manufacturing facility. Officials reportedly found hygiene and sanitation deficiencies and alleged that cattle feed bran was being used as a raw material in biscuits intended for human consumption. FSSAI had earlier suspended the company’s manufacturing licence before initiating prosecution.
In a separate case, Dodla Dairy faced prosecution after laboratory tests of its full-cream milk samples reportedly detected caustic soda and detergents. The samples were also found to fall short of the prescribed minimum milk fat requirements, raising concerns over compliance with food quality and safety standards.
UEIR Organic Foods also came under the regulator’s scrutiny after laboratory analysis of its yellow raisins reportedly detected pesticide residues exceeding permitted limits. The findings have brought attention to the need for stringent safety checks on products sold under organic food labels.
The proceedings against the three companies form part of FSSAI’s enforcement efforts to address alleged violations of food safety regulations and protect consumers from potentially unsafe products.
The cases highlight the importance of compliance with prescribed manufacturing, hygiene and product quality standards across the food industry. The legal proceedings will determine the consequences of the alleged violations in accordance with applicable food safety laws.
