Instagram has launched Instants, a new feature aimed at enabling users to share casual, in-the-moment photos that disappear after being viewed, as the platform sharpens its focus on private and real-time communication.
Designed as a more relaxed alternative to Stories and feed posts, Instants allows users to capture and send unedited photos directly from the inbox. Users can add captions before sharing and choose recipients from either their Close Friends list or mutual followers.
Once shared, Instants appear as a stack of images in the recipient’s inbox and vanish after being opened. The feature supports reactions, replies, and resharing, encouraging more conversational interactions.
Instagram has also introduced a private archive where users can store their shared Instants. These can be compiled into recap Stories for wider sharing. Additional features include an “undo” option to retract posts before they are viewed and a “snooze” function to temporarily mute incoming Instants.
To further simplify access, the company is testing a standalone Instants app in select markets. The app provides direct camera access and integrates with Instagram accounts, allowing seamless sharing across both platforms.
Safety and privacy remain central to the rollout. Existing controls such as block, mute, and restrict extend to Instants, while the feature is integrated with Teen Accounts and parental supervision tools, including time limits and sleep mode restrictions.
Instants also prevents screenshots and screen recordings, and all shared content is subject to Instagram’s Community Standards, with reporting mechanisms in place.
The feature is now available globally within Instagram, while the standalone app is being rolled out in select countries.
