Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has supplied the entire quantity of special-grade steel for INS Anjadip, the third Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) corvette set to be commissioned into the Indian Navy.

Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), INS Anjadip follows the commissioning of INS Arnala and INS Androth last year, marking another step in strengthening India’s coastal defence capabilities.

The ASW-SWC corvettes are being constructed to replace the Navy’s ageing Abhay-class vessels and enhance anti-submarine warfare operations in shallow waters.

As part of the broader project, SAIL has supplied approximately 3,500 tonnes of special-grade steel for the eight ASW-SWC corvettes being built by GRSE. The steel has been sourced from SAIL’s integrated plants at Bokaro, Bhilai and Rourkela, highlighting the robustness of India’s domestic manufacturing and supply chain ecosystem.

The development underscores SAIL’s ongoing contribution to India’s defence indigenisation efforts and its commitment to the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat by reducing import dependence in critical sectors.

Over the years, SAIL has supplied special-grade steel for several key naval projects, including INS Vikrant, INS Udaygiri, INS Nilgiri and INS Surat, reinforcing its strategic role in supporting the country’s maritime defence infrastructure.
