Walmart-owned Flipkart is planning to expand into movie and concert ticket sales in India, marking its entry into a fast-growing entertainment segment, according to news reports citing sources familiar with the matter.

The move comes as India’s live events and ticketing market continues to gain momentum, driven by rising consumer spending on entertainment. Large-scale concerts, international tours, and major sporting events particularly cricket are drawing massive audiences across metro cities, boosting demand for digital ticketing platforms.

Sources indicated that Flipkart is targeting a May launch for its ticketing service. This would place it in direct competition with established players such as BookMyShow, backed by Accel, and Zomato’s District platform. The company is aiming to capitalise on increasing disposable incomes and widespread smartphone adoption in India.

In parallel, Flipkart is also reportedly preparing to pilot a food delivery service around the same time, although timelines may shift as plans evolve, according to media reports.

Founded in 2007 as an online bookseller, Flipkart has grown into one of India’s leading e-commerce platforms, competing with global giant Amazon. The company was valued at approximately $37 billion in 2024, when Google acquired a $350 million stake, building on Walmart’s $16 billion majority acquisition in 2018.

Flipkart has also been laying the groundwork for a potential initial public offering (IPO) in India. Recent steps include shifting its holding company back to India, restructuring senior leadership, and strengthening key verticals such as its fashion arm, Myntra.
