Mahima Kaul, director of public policy at Netflix India, has announced her departure from the streaming platform after leading its global affairs function in the country.
In a LinkedIn post, Kaul expressed gratitude for the opportunity to establish Netflix’s global affairs function in India, build partnerships and skilling programmes, and advocate for the media and entertainment (M&E) sector.
Kaul’s departure follows a career spanning public policy leadership roles at Netflix, Twitter and Bumble. Across these organisations, she worked at the intersection of technology, government policy and society, engaging with regulatory questions concerning digital intermediaries, content publishers and the broader digital ecosystem.
Reflecting on the evolving landscape, Kaul highlighted the growing influence of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), and a new generation of content creators in shaping how people consume information and develop their worldviews.
Her exit comes amid reports of planned job cuts at Netflix, with the company expected to reduce its global workforce by around 1,000 employees. The proposed reductions mark the streaming giant’s largest round of layoffs since 2022, as it reassesses resource allocation amid changing business priorities and growth pressures.
In 2022, Netflix cut around 150 jobs in May and another 300 in June, citing slower revenue growth and the need to align costs with business performance.
Looking ahead, Kaul said she intends to spend time reading and writing while remaining open to conversations and new opportunities.
