Anthropic has appointed Amlan Mohanty as Head of Policy and External Affairs for India, signalling a stronger push to engage with policymakers and shape conversations around artificial intelligence governance in the country.
Mohanty announced his new role on LinkedIn, highlighting Anthropic’s safety-first approach to building AI. He noted that his early experience within the company reinforced his belief in the transformative potential of AI, while underlining the importance of managing its risks responsibly.
“India is key to the future of AI – the scale, diversity and potential for impact are unmatched… I'm excited to shape Anthropic's early presence in India and build trusted partnerships with government, industry and civil society,” he said.
Prior to joining Anthropic, Mohanty held several policy and research roles across leading institutions. He worked as a public policy counsel at Google from 2018 to 2022. He later served as a Fellow at Carnegie India, where he led the AI programme, and as an Associate Fellow at the Centre for Responsible AI, focusing on AI safety and governance.
He was also a Non-Resident Fellow at NITI Aayog, advising on emerging technology policy. In addition, Mohanty is a Visiting Professor at the National Law School of India University, where he teaches AI policy and technology regulation.
The appointment comes amid growing interest among global AI companies in India as both a deployment and policy market.
In 2024, OpenAI appointed Pragya Mishra as its public policy head for India, reflecting a broader industry trend of strengthening regulatory engagement as governments evaluate frameworks for AI governance.
