YouTube has expanded its AI-powered likeness detection feature to all users above the age of 18, in a significant move to address the growing threat of deepfakes and synthetic media abuse.

The feature, which has been under development for nearly two years, was initially rolled out to a limited group of creators before being extended to high-profile individuals including celebrities, journalists, politicians, and athletes. With the latest expansion, everyday users and creators can now monitor unauthorised AI-generated use of their facial likeness across the platform.

Designed on similar principles as YouTube’s Content ID system, the tool identifies visual matches instead of copyrighted audio or video. Users are required to undergo a selfie-style facial verification process along with ID authentication, enabling the system to detect altered or synthetic depictions uploaded by others. When a match is flagged, users receive alerts via YouTube Studio and can request content removal under the platform’s privacy policies.

The rollout comes amid rising global concern over the misuse of generative AI technologies. Increasingly accessible tools have led to a surge in deepfake content, including misinformation, identity manipulation, and non-consensual imagery, placing mounting pressure on digital platforms to strengthen user protections.

YouTube said the initiative is aimed at ensuring users “stay in control of their likeness” as AI-generated content continues to evolve. The company added that the feature will be rolled out in phases over the coming weeks.

The move is expected to have wider industry implications, potentially setting a precedent for other social media platforms to introduce similar identity protection measures in response to the rapid rise of synthetic media.
