Adidas has confirmed that it is reducing roles within its Technology organisation in India, following reports that nearly half of the workforce at its India Tech Hub in Gurugram could be affected.
In a statement to Wocult, Adidas said it had taken the “difficult decision” to reduce a number of roles within its technology organisation in India. The company said the move is part of its ongoing efforts to align its operating model with the changing requirements of the business.
“We are deeply grateful to our colleagues for their many contributions to Adidas. We are committed to supporting our impacted colleagues with transition assistance during this time,” the company said.
According to the report, around 350 or more employees could be impacted at the Gurugram-based India Tech Hub, which has a workforce of approximately 700. The reported figure would translate to roughly 45–50% of the hub's employees. However, Adidas has not confirmed the number of employees affected.
Software engineers, data scientists and data engineers are among the roles reportedly impacted by the restructuring.
The reported layoffs were communicated to employees during a town hall on September 15. Employees affected by the exercise have reportedly been divided into two groups. While some received exit letters on the same day, another group has been asked to continue until December to complete handovers to colleagues at other Adidas technology hubs.
The latter group has reportedly been given time to explore other roles within the organisation. Employees who are unable to secure another position are expected to have December 15 as their last working day, according to the report.
Adidas has not disclosed details of the severance packages, notice pay or redeployment support for affected employees.
The company said the changes are intended to simplify parts of its organisation, strengthen critical capabilities and position its technology function for long-term growth as the business and technology landscape evolves.
Adidas' Gurugram operations include its local marketing organisation and one of its Global Engineering Tech Hubs. The company has also expanded its technology and business operations in India, including the opening of a Global Business Services centre in Chennai in 2024.
