The Central Government has introduced mandatory vegetarian and non-vegetarian labelling for a range of personal care and cosmetic products, including soaps, shampoos, toothpaste and toiletries.
The requirement follows an amendment to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, which came into effect on September 21, 2026, according to a report by India Today.
Under the amended rules, products made from vegetarian-origin ingredients will be required to display a green dot, while products containing ingredients of non-vegetarian origin will carry a red or brown dot.
The prescribed symbol will have to be prominently displayed at the top of the main display panel of the product packaging.
The new labelling requirement applies to soaps, shampoos, toothpaste, cosmetics and other toiletries, giving consumers information on the nature of the ingredients used in these products.
